Q: What is dharma?

Your dharma is simply your purpose in life.

Q: How did you come to learn about dharma?

I first learned of dharma from reading Deepak Chopra books and got much deeper into it doing my yoga and wellness training at The Chopra Center.

Q: Why do you believe it’s so important for individuals to pursue dharma?

I believe it’s not only important, but necessary for individuals to discover their dharma to experience true joy in life. When you are in dharma, you serve yourself, as well as others.

kathi-donnelly-bioQ: How do you think dharma impacts business relationships and our ability to succeed in business?

Business relationships are positively impacted when people are in their dharma, because when you are in dharma, you are doing what you do best. [You’re] not trying or struggling to be someone else or constantly seeking for outside approval. In dharma, people are not in competition with one another; they collaborate and value the skills others bring to the project, the office, or whatever it is [they’re doing]. In dharma, you communicate clearly with respect, kindness, compassion, and empathy. You are quicker to forgive yourself and others for mistakes and can make creative solutions to problems rather than placing blame, which is much more productive. In dharma, you do not feel threatened by others in their success; rather, you celebrate others success, creating a very positive and motivating work atmosphere! I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like they make a difference, whether it’s at home, in the office, or in the world?

Kathi is the founder of GoovYoga and #RockYourDharma, an all-inclusive program guiding girls to get connected with their dharma, or purpose in life, celebrate their unique gifts, and recognize and honor others. Using the tools and techniques she learned from the Chopra Center coupled with her drive to help others learn ways to feel better, Kathi opened GroovYoga Dharma Center—a yoga center with a mission to help people get connected with themselves and their potential. Kathi has also co-created a Dharma program with Synergy Behavioral Health Group out of Delaware. The program has been approved by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners to provide continuing education credits for social workers and clinicians to utilize in their practice.

Q: What are some tools people can use to tap into their dharma or purpose in life?

People can tap into their dharma by meditating. Just sitting quietly, [choose to] relax and breathe. This is so easy, free and powerful! Even if it’s five minutes a day, this is the best way to tap into yourself, the collective, and your dharma! Take a walk, commune with nature, garden, run, or do a yoga practice (there are so many different types of yoga, choose one that works for you!).

Q: What do you think happens to us when we are out of alignment with or do not pursue our dharma/purpose?

When you’re not living in your dharma, you can feel disconnected, resentful, untrusting, and unforgiving of yourself and others. [You’re] quick to anger, feel depressed, anxious, and powerless. You just feel that you can’t make a difference so “why bother?” You feel as if you will never have enough and you won’t be enough.

QHow do you help individuals tap into their dharma?

I guide people to their dharma through meditation and yoga. You can call it OMMM Observing Meditation, Movement, and Mindfulness OMMM. 🙂 Also I encourage everyone to experience gratitude! Think of what you already have, focus on what you can do, and celebrate in this moment rather than what you can’t do. Be grateful for the day, your bed, your cup of coffee, your breath, this moment! Lynn Twist has a great quote: ”What we appreciate in life appreciates.” Cool, huh?

In addition, my teacher Deepak teaches the three soul questions to ask: Who am I? What do I want? How can I serve others with my gifts and talents? These questions answered bring you to your dharma

Q: Anything you’d like to add?

Yes! Be the best YOU you can be! Just as our organs have specific functions or a purpose in our bodies, so do we have a specific purpose on this earth. Think about this; if your heart tries to perform like your lungs or kidneys, you will die. It’s important and necessary to discover your purpose (dharma) in this world! Whether it serves one person or one billion people, we need you to be the best YOU to make the world a better place! So go and ROCK YOUR DHARMA!!!!!!
